Through the Wind River Reservation, partly a beautiful green valley with many Indian settlements or houses scattered throughout. And partly desert like spectacular country.
It looks pretty poverty stricken in terms of the housing
and we stopped at the Trading Post and bought a few souvenirs t shirts and the like.
Crowheart Butte named after .... Well you should read about that below. Found out that the Shoshone and Arapohoe tribes have their own laws on this 1 million plus acre reservation. An interesting story Interesting background
about how things developed.
Further along the road we came to Dubois a touristy
but cute little town that had log cabin frontages and walkways
and some interesting little galleries. We had ice cream sundaes in an old fashioned drugstore
with stools at the counter. The road over the pass to Jackson was slow with roadworks
but nevertheless beautiful. You are not allowed through roadworks yourself here - they have a pilot vehicle that you have to follow.
A woman at Dubois told us that it has taken 7 years to complete the roadworks which are nearly all done. Once over the pass you can see the stunning Tetons
although our view was obscured by the smoke from wildfires. We could see how gobsmacking these mountains are.
The view over the Snake River was lovely even with the smoke. Saw some bison and deer and pronghorns on the way into town.
Someone getting tired of the photos. We made our way to the motel. Had dinner in town and watched the shoot out at the town square which is a regular event over summer. It was loud with guns going off but well done. Photos from town not transferring as Internet is crap here. Jackson reminds me of Queenstown - spectacular scenery but many tourists.
